EP Review: Regurgitated Guts - Esophageal Mutilation

Regurgitated Guts - Esophageal Mutilation

Caligari Records - 2021 (Unspeakable Axe Records - 2017)

8/10

Is this exactly what you’re picturing? A complete Scream Bloody Gore era Death ripoff? Actually, not quite. Despite using a song title from that in the band’s name, Regurgitated Guts, and another in the EP title, Esophageal Mutilation, it really isn’t. That said, this is certainly OSDM worship in the most pure form. Filthy and disgusting lyrical themes and cover art? Check. Guttural vocals and rhythms at extreme speeds? Certainly. General harsh environment boosted by a slightly rougher production? All there.

But it’s pleasantly surprising how strong ten minutes of something we’ve all heard hundreds of times can be. The title track especially lays on some slower chops for the intro, with a slick transition into the meat of the riffing. The song later returns to this before reeling in the blasting speeds even harder. As a matter of fact, the slower sections of the songs feel the tightest, reflected in the outing on “Coffin Birth'' as well. The general energy creates a very convincing environment, and the actual execution of the four quick tracks is very refreshing. This is the only offering that these Canadian death metallers have given us so far, but I’ll be damned if it doesn’t open a path for a really strong debut record.
