Demo Review: Fournier - Fournier

Fournier - Fournier
Caligari Records - 2026
8.5/10

Early this year, the dual-islands known as New Zealand blessed us with a new project known as Fournier. Being the outfit's first demo, and given what its logo looks like, it would be easy to assume it's just simply another one of the familiar. In a way, the self-titled intro to the project is that, but they cover this style with such a keen ear that makes me look forward to a future. Is that not what a demo should be?

Indeed, Fournier's four tracks do little in the regards to standing out from their peers stylistically, but the execution is phenomenal. Opener "Cast Adrift" is a rumbling scorcher that shows no shyness in terms of unloading crushing drum kicks with a nasty tone that matches the tremolo-laced rhythms. "Constructing The Ark" follows in an even filthier fashion, coating unlovable gutturals that almost mesh together atop the still impressive riffs, making this one of the slimiest cuts on the demo. Side B starts us with an almost Death-esque melody wail in "Supreme Ornaments" before reaching an almost cosmic sounding bulk, and "An Angel With A Bullet" (what a badass title) sends us off with a familiar harsh stench.

It's early in the game, but man, in less than twenty minutes, Fournier are here to warn us that they mean business, and to brace for impact! I haven't fully nailed down which facet they're going to emphasize, be it the more melodic and spacy side or the filthy and crushing side, but the fact that they managed both so smoothly this early on is extremely impressive.
